IRS rules volunteer firefighters are really county employees

The Internal Revenue Service has been auditing Escambia County’s volunteer fire departments. The agency ruled the stipends paid to volunteer firefighters are taxable wages subject to all employment taxes. Escambia County will have to pay the IRS over $78,000.

Volunteer firefighters receive stipend pay for answering 25 percent of their station’s calls during the month, ranging from $300 for a Firefighter I to $550 for a district chief. NorthEscambia.com has more on the issue.
