Collier Merrill is making his last CMPA board meeting a huge one. After weeks of negotiations, University of West Florida President Dr. Judy Bense announced today the university will play its first games in 2016 at the Vince Whibbs, Sr. Community Maritime Park.

“Why have a football team?” asked Bense. “Because it involves students, creates affinity with our alumni and increases our engagement with the community.”

The Argos will play in the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference, which includes Delta State University, Lee University, University of North Alabama, Shorter University, Valdosta State University, University of West Alabama and University of West Georgia.

Merrill threw the gauntlet out to West Georgia, where former UWF VP Kyle Marreo is the new president. “We’re going to get that ‘traitor’,” joked Merrill.

UWF Athletic Director Dave Scott said that he expects to hire a coach by the spring of 2014.

Dr. Bense said that she believes the maritime park stadium is a good choice for the university.

“It’s best of the community, it’s best for the university,” said Bense.
