Jobs budget cuts jobs

Sarasota Herald Tribune reports that the state budget which goes into effect on July—the one Gov. Rick Scott has proclaimed as the jobs budget– will result in the loss of thousands of jobs:

Some 4,500 positions in state government will be eliminated; roughly half of those jobs are open, but half have people in them – the layoffs will be in state mental health hospitals, juvenile justice facilities and prisons.

With an 8 percent cut in education funding, the new budget will result in the loss of thousands of jobs in schools around the state. For instance, Broward County has announced that 1,400 teachers will be laid off in the coming year.

A $150 million shift of funding from Florida’s transportation budget will result in the loss of more than 8,000 potential jobs, according to state road builders.
