Kanisha Fells Named 2025 Beyond School Walls Big of the Year

When we think about the power of mentorship, we often focus on the transformation it brings to young people’s lives. But sometimes, the most inspiring stories come from mentors who go above and beyond, showing us what true commitment looks like.

  • This year, Big Brothers Big Sisters has named Kanisha Fells as our 2025 Beyond School Walls Big of the Year—a recognition that celebrates not just her dedication, but her heart.

One Match Became Two

Kanisha’s story began in 2023 when she was matched with Ashayla through our Beyond School Walls program at Navy Federal Credit Union, where Kanisha works. This workplace-based mentoring initiative connects students with employee volunteers, creating opportunities for career exploration and personal growth during the school year.

From day one, Kanisha brought something special to her role as a Big Sister. Her approach wasn’t just about checking boxes or fulfilling requirements—it was about building a genuine relationship rooted in warmth, patience, and unwavering support.

In early 2024, Kanisha faced a choice that would define her mentoring journey. Another student, Ta’Nae, needed a Big Sister after her previous match ended. Taking on a second Little is no small commitment, requiring double the time, energy, and emotional investment.

For Kanisha, the decision was clear. She welcomed Ta’Nae with open arms, creating a supportive trio that would change all their lives forever.

The three spent their Beyond School Walls sessions engaged in meaningful activities that went far beyond typical mentoring meetings. Over breakfast and lunch, they participated in:

  • Financial literacy workshops that prepared both girls for real-world money management
  • Job shadowing experiences that opened doors to career possibilities
  • Leadership development sessions that built confidence and communication skills
  • Team-building activities that strengthened their bond
  • Career readiness programs that equipped them with professional tools

These structured sessions provided the foundation, but it was the genuine connection between Kanisha, Ashayla, and Ta’Nae that made the real difference.

Celebrating Success

The culmination of Kanisha’s dedication came in 2025 when both Ashayla and Ta’Nae graduated high school. This milestone represents more than academic achievement—it reflects the power of having someone believe in you and support you through challenges and triumphs alike.

  • The impact of their relationship even gained national attention when Kanisha and Ashayla were featured in a national Ulta Beauty campaign, showcasing the transformative power of mentorship to audiences across the country.

The depth of Kanisha’s impact is perhaps best captured in Ashayla’s own words: “My Big Sister is the most kindhearted, outgoing person you could meet! She’s my biggest supporter, and I’m hers! I’ll always be proud of her, and she deserves everything that comes her way!”

  • This mutual admiration and support exemplifies what we hope to see in every mentoring relationship—a bond that enriches both the mentor and mentee, creating a foundation for lifelong connection and growth.
