City of Pensacola press release: Today, Monday, Jan. 31, is the deadline for individuals living in the homeless encampment under Interstate 110 to vacate the encampment for the city to conduct a thorough cleaning and sanitization of the area, as indicated in notices posted by the City of Pensacola on Monday, Jan. 10, 2022.
The City of Pensacola has been continuing to work with local homeless nonprofits over the past several weeks to connect individuals living in the I-110 encampment with shelter and available resources. Through partnerships with nonprofit organizations, the city has been and will continue to work toward the smoothest transition possible for everyone living in the I-110 encampment.
After notices were posted on Jan. 10, City Code Enforcement officers walked through the encampment to speak with individuals in the area and inform them of the posted notices. Code Enforcement officers also distributed a United Way 211 resources guide at the encampment, along with contact information for the homeless nonprofits that have received ARPA funding allocated by City Councill. These handouts include information about housing assistance, employment programs, financial assistance, feeding programs and more.
City staff and representatives from homeless organizations have visited the encampment multiple times over the past several weeks to reinforce the information in the posted notices and share shelter options with individuals in the area.
People living in the encampment must collect their personal belongings and vacate the area as outlined in the posted notices.
Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 1, the city will thoroughly clean and sanitize the area and collect any remaining personal items. Any items left behind at the encampment will be safely stored until Wednesday, March 16, 2022 on site. During this period, individuals will have the opportunity to collect their belongings as indicated in the posted notices.
