Last day of state legislature

Miami Herald has put together a list of important legislation that’s still on the table for the state House and Senate to resolve on the last day of this session:

PROPERTY TAXES: Lawmakers couldn’t agree on how to cut property taxes, so they decided to come back in June for a special session.

• MARLINS: Once again, the perennial bill to seek state financing for a Marlins retractable-roof stadium will remain unresolved until the final hours of the final day.

• CLASS II SLOTS: The push to allow bingo-style Class II slot machines at horse and dog tracks and jai alai frontons is likely dead for now, as long as the revenues can’t be tied to reducing property taxes.

• SCHOOL CURRICULUM: A top priority of the House speaker to revamp Florida’s school curriculum has passed the House and is awaiting last-day approval in the Senate.

• AUTO INSURANCE: The law that requires drivers to carry at least $10,000 in personal injury protection insurance is also headed for a crash as the House and Senate can’t agreed on how far to go in reducing fraud.

• CITIZENS INSURANCE: The governor has been working aggressively to make it easier for homeowners to get insurance coverage from Citizens, but House resistance may keep it from passing.

• KIDCARE: A plan to rework the state health-insurance plan for children of the working poor is likely to die because a key sponsor could not resolve late-session disagreements enough to satisfy Senate leaders.

Let’s see what they try to sneak in.
