Libraries All Week

Tomorrow evening, the West Florida Public Library will host a public forum in an effort to provide a format for discussion and input regarding the future direction of the local library system.

The meeting is one of several that will focus on the libraries. Yesterday, the WFPL hosted two focus groups “to help shape the future of libraries in Escambia County and the City of Pensacola.” On Jan. 17, Escambia County will have a planning session for its LIbrary Blue Ribbon Task Force.

The flurry of meetings come as the governance of the library system is switched from the city to the county. Next week, on Jan. 22, the Escambia County Commission is having a special meeting in order to discuss the transition.

Tomorrow evening’s public forum will come after a three-hour workshop hosted by the Florida Department of State Division of Library and Information Services. The workshop is entitled Library Board and Friends Development Workshop, and “will cover the relationship between an advisory board, the governing board (currently Pensacola City Council), the library support group, Board of County Commissioners and Director.”

The state meeting will be held at the main library branch, 239 N. Spring St. from 1 to 4 p.m. tomorrow. The public forum will be held at the Escambia County Extension Office, 3740 Stephani Road in Cantonment, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
