Library scramble

Next week the Pensacola City Council will consider issuing a RFP for the downtown library that is currently proposed to be built on the site of the old Spring St. fire station. However, there are several discussions in various camps about other possible locations, spending up the building schedule and about also issuing a RFP for a West Pensacola library.

As we’ve reported, architect Miller Caldwell wants to the downtown library to be built at or near the downtown Technology Park….close to Aragon and IHMC. Lumon May is pursuing the idea of combining the LOST funds for the downtown and west Pensacola libraries and building a larger facility in the revitalized Belmont-Devillers area. And Councilman Larry Johnson has been talking about putting the new downtown library on north Palafox at the Gregory St. intersection.

This will have to be discussed more openly at council committee meetings, maybe even hold a workshop.
