Limbo for Occupy

Occupy Pensacola now sits in an undefined limbo. But it seems limbo’s time may be limber.

After camping on the lawn at Pensacola City Hall for the past two weeks, the local Occupy movement no longer has a permit—or, letter of no objection—that allows it to pitch its tents on the lawn in a show of support for the broader Occupy Wall Street movement.

The Pensacola City Council debated the issue at length, but ultimately Mayor Ashton Hayward must decide if the Occupiers can keep their tents.

Because the Council made this official realization last week, just before a long, holiday weekend. today was the Mayor’s first opportunity to respond. Nothing happened.

“There were other more pressing issues that were on our calendar,” said Travis Peterson, the Mayor’s spokesman.

Sometime this week, a decision will be reached, Peterson said. He did not believe there had been any new discussion amongst Hayward’s staff, or with the Occupiers.

“I think everybody’s just got other things they’re dealing with right now,” Peterson said. “It’s on a list, but not at the top of the list.”
