A local church where the food pantry was broken into in May is continuing its mission to help the homeless with a special cook-out and food distribution on Independence Day.
Holy Cross Metropolitan Community Church will host it’s usual weekly food distributions on Wednesday, July 4, including a hot meal of hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch and the distribution of pantry items.
Members of the church will join the cook-out, opening the the event to the entire community. The food pantry distribution begins at 10 a.m. with the picnic beginning at 11am.
“Normally, the church is closed on a weekday holiday, but we feel it is more important than ever to continue this mission of Christian love for those less fortunate in our community,” said Rev. Rick Sosbe, pastor at Holy Cross MCC. “Our church families and friends will join us as we gather in a true spirit of independence — Independence from hunger, want and isolation.”
On May 22, the church’s pantry was broken into, with food and a window air conditioning unit stolen. However, the church didn’t miss a single distribution day. Additionally, publicity from that event has increased demand at the church’s weekly pantry and hot food distribution.
Before the break-in, the church saw an average of 40 to 50 people a week seeking food, and now that number approaches 100 every Wednesday.
