Local income falls for third consecutive year

Household incomes fell in Escambia County for the third consecutive year and are barely ahead of the 2005 figures, according 2009 American Community Survey which was just released by the US Census Bureau. Our median household income is $40,922, down 1.3 percent from 2008 ($41,474) and down 3.8 percent from 2006 ($42,353). We still are behind the state median $44,736.

The percentage of people in Escambia County living below the poverty level jumped from 15.4 percent in 2008 to 18.9 percent in 2009. In 2000, the percentage was 15.4 percent.

The 2009 state percentage is 14.9 percent.
