Local Kids to Learn Sailing

Kids participating in city youth programs next summer may get the opportunity to learn to sail.

The City of Pensacola’s Neighborhood Services Department is partnering with the Pensacola Yacht Club beginning in June to offer children the experience of sailing. At least three children involved in city programs will be participating in each of the yacht club’s weeklong beginner-sailing camps. The camps teach the basics: how to rig a sailboat, right a flipped boat and handle emergency situations.

“This partnership provides us with the opportunity to expose kids throughout our community to the joys and opportunities that sailing provides,” said PYC Commodore Alan C. McMillan.

City officials view the partnership as an opportunity to expose kids to a long-time local tradition.

“Adding sailing camps to the city’s youth programs befits a community with a proud maritime tradition,” said Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward.

The Pensacola Yacht Club will hold around 10 camps beginning in June.
