Markes has child custody hearing today

Erin Markes has a child dependency hearing in Milton today. In March, she was jailed for felony child neglect after investigators were called to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, where Jaden (age 4) weighed only 10 pounds, suffering from bed sores and low body temperature, and missing his medication.

Jaden suffers from Miller-Dieker Syndrome, a rare and fatal form of the genetic brain disorder lissencephaly that doctors say now has halted his development and may have caused his body to not absorb nutrients or medications.

Jaden remains at West Florida Hospital in the custody of the state Department of Children and Families.

State Attorney Bill Eddins has not charged Markes yet. James “Bart” Countess, an attorney with the Tallahassee-based Arrowood Law Firm, has agreed to take over Markes defense.
