Matt Gaetz announced today he is a candidate for the Florida House of Representatives District 4 seat for the 2010 general election.
Gaetz, a Fort Walton Beach Republican, is an attorney with the law firm of Keefe, Anchors, Gordon and Moyle. He is a graduate of Niceville High School and Florida State University. He earned his law degree from the College of William and Mary.
“Government can be smaller, smarter and more responsive at all levels,†Gaetz said. “Fighting bureaucracy will be tough, but I am encouraged by the power of hard work and good ideas. I look forward to a spirited campaign. The encouragement I have received to run for the State House has been humbling and inspiring. Northwest Florida deserves an energetic State Representative grounded in the values of our community. â€
Most recently, Gaetz has gained public notice as Okaloosa County’s chief litigator in support of the F-35 mission at Eglin Air Force Base. In 2008, Gaetz led a successful grassroots campaign to stop the City of Fort Walton Beach from raising property taxes. He currently represents local residents as an advocate for open government.
Gaetz is a founder of the “Trendsetters†mentoring program in Okaloosa County’s schools and is a member of the board of directors of the Emerald Coast Marine Institute. Both are programs to help struggling students develop academic and citizenship skills. He is active in other civic and charitable causes in the community.
State House District 4 consists of portions of Okaloosa and Santa Rosa Counties.
