The Pensacola Chamber Foundation and the University of West Florida (UWF) recently announced that Jerry Maygarden has been appointed chairman of the UWF College of Business Advisory Council. Maygarden will be replacing Gen. Michael Ferguson, who served as chair of the council for nearly two decades.

In an effort to develop high-quality business programs within the University, the advisory council provides advice, guidance and support to the College dean and faculty, while also promoting leadership and management in areas such as job opportunities, private fundraising activities and community needs.

“Professional development and positive achievements are critical components that lead to future success,” said Maygarden. “I am honored to serve in this role, and I look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence that the University has produced throughout its history.”

A former mayor of Pensacola, Maygarden has also served as a state legislator and majority leader in the Florida House of Representatives. He was the president and chief executive officer for the Baptist Health Care Foundation as well as the Greater Pensacola Chamber. Maygarden currently serves as the executive director for the Pensacola Chamber Foundation.

“We are thrilled that Jerry Maygarden agreed to be the new chair of the College of Business Advisory Council (COBAC) at the University of West Florida. His distinguished professional career has made a lasting impact on Pensacola and Northwest Florida in so many ways. Jerry continues to be deeply engaged in the business, historical, cultural and philanthropic activities of the Pensacola and Northwest Florida community,” said Dr. Tim O’Keefe, dean of the College of Business. “The engagement of our community leaders in the professional preparation of our business students is vital to the mission of the College of Business. Jerry’s leadership of the COBAC will assure the continued meaningful connection between present and future business leaders in our community.”

A graduate of UWF, Maygarden holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in communication arts. He also completed professional development programs in public policy and church administration conducted by the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, respectively.
