Mayor says city is not broke

At meeting today’s “Morning with the Mayor” session, I asked Mayor Ashton Hayward whether the city was broke.

IN: What is the financial status of the city? We hear from your critics that the city is broke.

AH: “I think, Rick, you may be hearing that from the county because I think the county doesn’t like that the city is doing such great things. The state of the city is terrific. We’re going to have money roll over from last year. I’ve cut the budget by $30 million in two and a half years.”

He praised his staff and his CFO, Dick Barker, for their efforts.

IN: So the city is not broke?

AH: “Absolutely not. I think we’re doing a helluva job.”
