In 2012, Va. Governor Bob McDonnell spoke at a campaign rally for Mitt Romney on the deck of The Fish House. Today McDonnell and his wife were guilty of public corruption.
According to the Washington Post, the former governor was convicted of 11 corruption-related counts. The former first lady was convicted of eight corruption-related charges, along with obstruction of justice.
National campaign finance watchdog Every Voice, formerly Public Campaign Action Fund, released the following statement on the guilty verdict in Virginia today:
“A jury of everyday Virginians returned guilty verdicts against Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife today, but the trial also exposed how our broader campaign finance system breeds corruption,†said David Donnelly, president and CEO of Every Voice. “The whole system is guilty of putting a privileged few above average voters, and Virginia lawmakers and Governor Terry McAuliffe ought to get to work to bring some sanity back to the financing of Virginia politics.”
