With a city of only 22.7 square miles most of the city fleet driving would be stop & go. Although the PPD is authorized 153 officers and has I think about 140, at any moment less than about a dozen are on patrol duty. They might need a traditional police cruiser but many others might be able to do fine with a Ford Escape Hybrid, as an example.

I was down finishing up my qualification and campaign report paperwork (for Mayor of Pensacola) and drove down Palafox behind a city Code Enforcement Ford Escape. It could just as easily have been a hybrid version and maybe should have been. Aside from the obvious benefit to the city treasury of saving money on gas, we would reduce the level of air pollutants.

I’ve got it written down on my Action Plan and regardless of who is elected it’s something the next council should consider.
