MILLER VOTES AGAINST DEMOCRAT “EMERGENCY” IRAQ WAR BILL

MILLER: DEMOCRATS SHOULD FUND TROOPS WITHOUT PORK PROJECTS

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jeff Miller (R-Fl-01) today voted against the Democrats’ Emergency Iraq War Supplemental bill, which was intended to fund the U.S. military in Iraq, but instead became a measure cluttered with expensive pork projects and artificial timelines for troop withdrawal.

“I am so disappointed that this bill was brought to the floor,” Miller said. “This was supposed to be an ‘Emergency War Supplemental Bill.’ — The bill should only contain funds for our troops and our military readiness.  It shouldn’t be about troop withdrawal or preventing our military forces from completing their mission, and it certainly shouldn’t be about dairy farmers and menhaden fishermen.”

Other examples of non-emergency pork-barrel spending include:

•           $25 million for spinach

•           $50 million for the “Capitol Hill Power Plant”

•           $5 million for tropical fish

•           $283 million for the Milk Income Loss Contract Program

•           $74 million for peanut storage costs

•           $120 million for shrimp and menhaden fishing industries

•           $25 million for livestock producers

•           $15 million for crop damage

•           $100 million for citrus producers

“Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats’ slow bleed strategy will harm our troops, harm our country and should be exposed for what it is,” said Miller. “The cost of fighting this war is extremely high, but the cost of losing it is higher.  Our troops deserve better than this bill.”
