MLK Parade of Books

Over 4,000 books and 10,000 bookmarks will be provided free to children and youth at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. parade Monday, Jan. 16.

A fairly young program, the MLK Parade of Books project started in 2010. Local businesses have partnered with Bethel Youth Development and Robert Robino Productions to provide reading materials to the youth in our area.

This year, 33 percent more books will be provided thanks to the community’s commitment to the project. Over the past years, at total of 10,000 books and 26,000 bookmarks have been handed out.

“It’s important that we continue to educate our great students about the significant and historical contributions of the King,” said Rev. Charles Morris, executive director of Bethel Youth Development, in a press release. “This not only strengthens their literary foundation of excellence of their future, but it also places Dr. King’s dream in their hands.”

Volunteers participating with the MLK Parade of Books will hand out the age and grade appropriate books at the parade. Award-winning graphic artist John Murray has designed the bookmark for the third year in a row.
