MOB idea – sell parks for housing

Cover 1

PNJ columnist Mark O’Brien writes today:

The city has more than 90 parks and recreation sites, which offer lots of open space but are costly to maintain.

The smart thing: Sell a few of those that are seldom used or too expensive.

The city could require that parks only be sold for “work-fare” homes for the young professionals — cops, nurses and teachers — this city needs for the next generation.

Our idea has been to have the City build more parking garages downtown and convert the huge parking lots into affordable apartments and townhomes. See Ballsy Plan II (Ballsy Plan 2)

I’m not sure filling in parks with housing is a good idea. However having these huge parking prairies for government workers and others downtown is a waste of space. Putting more houses in surburbia isn’t as good as putting more housing downtown.

…but of course MOBy and I don’t agree on many things.
