Mobile, Ala. mayor speaks out on gun violence

Mayor Sam Jones is a part of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. He was one of two Alabama mayors to sign a Dec. 19 letter to President Barack Obama urging his gun control agenda include regulations making it harder for dangerous people to possess guns, and easier for police and prosecutors to crack down on them.

The Mobile Press Register reports that he spoke out yesterday a press conference. Jones would like to see a balanced approach to gun control that preserves Second Amendment rights while controlling gun violence.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns was started by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, has more than 800 mayors from cities across the U.S. More mayors have joined the organization since the killings at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Florida has 41 mayors who have joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward is not a member.

The organization recently released a new television ad featuring Roxanna Green, mother of Christina-Taylor Green, the nine year-old girl murdered that day. The 30-second spot opens with a scene from the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in which 20 children were killed. In the ad, Green demands that elected officials in Washington D.C. take immediate action to reduce gun violence in America.
