Engineers, contractors, developers and power brokers use hunting camps to wine and dine elected officials and county department heads. There are no ethics requirements for county commissioners or department heads to report these trips and overnight stays. Many of the camps are in Alabama, faraway from reporters and pesky Sunshine laws.
Donald Moore (of AES “fame”) has a hunting camp in Santa Rosa County. According to the property appraiser records, the building is over 6,500 sq. ft. (value $300,740) and sits on 88 acres (value $41,800).
The just value is $826,375, but it is only assessed for $376,844.
