More accountability and oversight needed for charter schools

School Desk
Ruth Melton, director of government relations for the Florida School Board Association, told Inweekly, “Every year, the state legislature takes a step forward in making charter schools more accountable. We hope in the future school districts will have a complete level of control over charter schools and allegations of misconduct can become a thing of the past.”

She said that many charter schools across the state are “outstanding” options but lack the transparency of public schools.

Melton said, “We cannot keep track because they are just not as transparent as your traditional public school. Many charter schools in the state fail to meet the mark in terms of service and protection of the students.”
