More on Jail Death

Shelia Doreen Jackson was in the Escambia County Jail awaiting to be transported to the state mental hospital. Jackson was arrested in May 2008 for possession of cocaine – a third degree felony.

Two doctors did psychological evaluations of Jackson and advised Judge Linda Noble that Jackson was incompetent to stand trial.

On Jan. 7, Judge Nobles finds Jackson incompetent to proceed and committed her to the Florida State Hospital. She was immediately remanded in the sheriff’s custody….prior to that Jackson had been out on bail – $1000 bond. She was in the jail waiting to be sent to the state mental hospital.

On the early hours of Jan. 21, Jackson is found dead in her infirmary bed. No foul is suspected. We have requested the autopsy report from Medical Examiner.

So we have another mentally ill person – with what appears to be severe health problems – dying almost two weeks later in the jail infirmary. Why was she in an infirmary instead of being sent to local hospital, if she was so ill?
