More problems for GOP commission ringer

Republican candidate John R. Johnson has more problems than just filling out the incorrect forms that led to his disqualification after a last-minute attempt to qualify to run against District 3 County Commissioner Lumon May.

Inweekly made a public record request for Johnson’s payment to qualify. The 2024 State Qualifying Handbook states the fee must be paid with a properly executed check on the campaign account. A cashier’s check is not acceptable.

Johnson paid with a cashier’s check and made it out to the Board of County Commissioners, not the Florida Department of State, Florida Secretary of State, or Florida Division of Elections as required. – Update: On radio on Monday morning, Supervisor of Election Robert Bender said the checks do need to be made out to the Board of County Commissioners so the county distribute the funds accordingly to various groups and agencies.

The Republican Party of Escambia County and his mystery financial backers didn’t hold his hands to make sure he knew how to qualify. Remember Johnson has been running for various offices since 1988. This was the first time that he ever raised $5,564 to pay the fee.

Supervisor of Elections Robert Bender will appear on “Real News with Rick Outzen” at 7 a.m. Monday to explain why Johnson was disqualified.
