Dear Candidates for Mayor,

First, I take this opportunity to personally thank each of you for the courage, passion, and determination it takes to run for political office.  I know from personal experience that the decision is not an easy one to make.  Running a political campaign involves a lot of time and is exhausting hard work.  I wish all of us well on this journey we have embarked upon.

While we may have different platforms and ideas regarding the governance of our city, there is one thing we must have in common.  We must all commit to upholding the city charter which is the constitution of our city.  I bring this up because our current mayor, Grover Robinson, is making decisions that will impact each one of us in the manner in which we conduct our campaigns.  Allow me to lay out the issue:

  1. The Charter provides

            Section 4.01. – Mayor.

                     (2) To enforce the charter and ordinances of the City and all applicable County, State, or federal general laws, special laws, or ordinances.

  1. City Ordinances 12-5-6. – Temporary signs; enforcement. Prohibits temporary signs from being placed on city residential and commercial rights- of –ways and public property. There are no exceptions. (Let me say right now that I am guilty and will correct my behavior). However, the mayor is instructing staff to allow signs on residential ROWs in flagrant violation of Section 12-5-6 and the City Charter.
  1. Charter Section 4:02 City Council

            Section 4.02. – City Council.

Powers and Duties. City Council Members shall exemplify good citizenship and exhibit a cooperative spirit. The City Council shall have the following powers and duties:

Mayor Robinson does not have the power or authority to decide which ordinances he will enforce and how signs and ROWs will be regulated.

By way of this communication, I am asking each candidate running for mayor to publically commit to upholding the City Charter and obeying Section 12-5-6 and any other ordinance regulating the placement of signs on city ROWs.

Thank you for your support in this matter – good luck, and stay safe. Sherri
