National Flag Football Championship begins today

Over 700 Collegiate Flag Football Players in Town for 3-Day tournament this weekend. The 2014 National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Flag Football Championship is being held at Escambia County’s Ashton Brosnaham Park Jan. 3-5.

The University of West Florida Recreation Department along with the Pensacola Sports Association won the bid to host this event in 2014, 2015, and 2016 and is the only collegiate national tournament of its kind.

Over 700 students from all over the country will be in Pensacola representing their schools which include Missouri, Texas Tech, University of Central Florida, University of West Florida, LSU, Georgia Southern, Valdosta State, Florida A&M, Air Force Academy, University of West Georgia, University of Alabama, University of New Orleans, FAMU, Vanderbilt, University of South Florida, and Akron. These teams and others qualified for the national championship by winning their regional tournament. Additionally, there is an “Open” bracket which allows for any team to register and compete.

Admission is free for anyone interested in watching and concessions will be available. Ashton Brosnaham Park is located at 10370 Ashton Brosnaham Road, off of 10-Mile Road.
