New Coastkeeper hired

The Emerald Coastkeeper, Inc. Board of Directors has selected Sava Varazo to be its new Coastkeeper. Varazo is a scientist that has 35 years environmental experience working with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Escambia County Water Quality & Land Management Division. He is one of the architects of Project Greenshores in Pensacola Bay south of Landry’s Seafood. He retired in late 2011 from Escambia County after as its Water Quality Manager for four years. He was a consultant in the years between his 2003 resignation from FDEP and his employment by the county.

Project GreenShores is a multi-million dollar habitat restoration that was a joint effort by FDEP’s Ecosystem Restoration Section, City of Pensacola, Escambia County, the Ecosystem Restoration Support Organization, the EPA Gulf of Mexico Program, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, NOAA, Gulf Power, local agencies, businesses and volunteers in a community. It has helped to restore the oyster reef, salt marsh and seagrass habitat within the Pensacola Bay, stabilize the shoreline and provide essential habitat for wildlife propagation and conservation.
