The media is filled with 9/11 documentaries, recollections and memorials. The story of Sept. 11, 2011 is more than a tale of terrorists killing thousands and trying to cripple our nation. The acts were heinous, but they aren’t the story. If so, then they have won.
No, the story is about the brave men and women who fought back, who risked their lives to save others. It’s a story of a nation that refused to give into despair. We all lost someone or something that day–a friend, a family member or sense of security, but we didn’t let it crush our spirits as the terrorists wanted.
Our nation handles tragedy well. Our people are hardy, brave, heroic. We are a nation of doers, problem-solvers and fighters. There is a reason that word “United” is in our country’s name. Despite being a hodgepodge of nationalities, races and religions, we can and do rally together when faced with tragedy.
Our freedom has been won thanks to the lives of thousands willing to fight for it. We can not and shall not live in fear. Today is a day to remind ourselves of this.
