No more sewage dumping in bays or sound

ECUA may have had to relocate the Main Street Sewage Treatment plant if a bill that is currently in the Florida Senate becomes law. The utility will definitely have to stop pumping the effluent from its Pensacola Beach plant into the Santa Rosa Sound.

The Senate Committee on Environmental Preservation and Conservation unanimously approved a bill this month that would end dumping of treated sewage into bays, lakes and other surface waters. It would require waste water be reused.

Under the bill (SB 1302), the utilities would have to submit plans to stop the dumping by 2013, and the sewage would have to meet stricter treatment standards by 2018. The ultimate goal would be to eliminate nearly all sewage dumping by 2025.

The Environment & Natural Resources Council is working on a similar bill in the House.
