Noose outside UWF dorm

On Saturday, the UWF African American Student Association held its annual awards gala. Today I was sent this email by a UWF student about a noose being found in a tree behind Martin Hall on the campus.

Dear Residential Students:

The University Police Department has received report of an incident occurring outside Martin Hall that appears to be racially motivated. A noose was tied to a tree behind the building. Currently, an investigation is underway. The University strives to create and maintain a community that is free of harassment, intimidation and/or humiliation for all students, faculty and staff. Please know the University of West Florida is committed to ensuring that all community members are treated with dignity and respect. We strive to develop and support a learning environment so each of us can genuinely enjoy equal opportunities to live, work, and learn.

The University has clear expectations for appropriate behavior and behavior outside of these expectations will not be tolerated. The University is committed to addressing all behavioral issues promptly. Please refer to page 28 of the University of West Florida Handbook for more information on the Student Code of Conduct. If you have any further information or questions about this situation, please contact the Residence Life staff, the Dean of Students Office or the University Police.

The Office of Inclusion Services and Programs will sponsor a Discussion on Discrimination on Wednesday, April 18 at 7:08 p.m. in the Conference Center Lounge. I hope you will choose to attend to voice your concerns and talk with others who feel the same as you.

Sincerely,

Kevin W. Bailey, Ph.D.
