‘Northern tier’ college blames COVID-19 on warm Southern beaches, Escambia positives double

A group of students from the University of Wisconsin – Madison have tested positive for coronavirus after a spring break trip to Alabama’s beaches.

The university’s Health Services announced a “cluster” of COVID-19 related to a spring break trip to Gulf Shores. According to WKOW, the trip involved fraternity and sorority members who started their break in Nashville around March 13 and moved to Gulf Shores in Alabama around March 16.  Read more.

TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Department of Health released updated numbers Monday evening about the coronavirus in the state. Here are some takeaways:

— 5,704: Total number of cases.

— 231: Increase in cases from a Monday morning count.

— 71: Deaths of Florida residents.

— 8: Increase in deaths from a Monday morning count.

— 715: Number of Florida residents hospitalized.

— 61: Increase in hospitalizations from a Monday morning count.

— 67: Cases in long-term care facilities.

— 54: Counties with confirmed cases.

— 1,701: Cases in Miami-Dade County, the largest amount in the state.

— 300: Cases in Orange County, the largest amount outside of Southeast Florida.

— 4: Counties with one case each (Gadsden, Holmes, Wakulla and Washington).

— 13: Counties without any confirmed cases.
