Nursing homes: we were lulled into thinking COVID was under control

Since last Thursday, local long-term facilities have reported that they have 60 more COVID-19 patients among their residents and have transferred eight to local hospitals.  The number of staff with the virus is down by 12 –but we don’t know if they’ve recovered or no longer work for the facilities.

As of yesterday, we had 452 COVID patients associated with local nursing homes – net increase of 56 cases.

On May 23, we had only 119 COVID-19 patients in our nursing homes – 92 residents, 8 transfers and 19 staff.

For June, the Florida Department of Health reported an increase of only 85 nursing home cases and eight deaths. The public was given the impression that COVID in the long-term care facilities was under control.

Then came July. Over 28 days, we’ve had 22 deaths in nursing homes and 345 new cases according to FDOH.

I had a reader tell me yesterday that cases in zip code 32504 are primarily nursing homes, inferring it’s not a big deal. FDOH hasn’t told us that, but the danger of the 452 cases is not only the residents. It’s the 138-150 staff members that are coming and out of the facilities and spreading the virus throughout the community.

On Monday, President Donald Trump announced plans to require certain nursing homes to test staff “and visitors” for COVID-19 once a week and opened the door to again allowing visitation at the homes.

Yesterday Gov. Ron DeSantis said he’s thinking about opening up nursing homes and assisted living facilities to visitation. He mentioned that need for rapid testing that would determine if visitors have the virus within 15 minutes.

I don’t think any of the local nursing homes have rapid testing capability. If so, their employees should be tested daily.
