Okaloosa County Tax Collector resigns

Chris Hughes has announced his resignation as Okaloosa Co. Tax Collector. For the past 4 years, Hughes has been in trouble.

A Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation in 2007 uncovered allegations that several of Hughes’ high-ranking employees were spending work hours helping him conduct private business.

His wife is an Air Force colonel stationed in Hawaii, and there were reports that he was spending more time there than in Okaloosa County.

In March 2009, Daily News reported that Hughes had handed out $692,000 in bonuses in three years–while other offices gave none.

The same month that Hughes had spent $182,000 in four years on travel for himself and key staff members. That total included $63,170 in out-of-state travel.

Synovus Bank has named Hughes and his wife as co-defendants with the Wilshire Holding Group in a lawsuit seeking payment of approximately $613,832 owed on a home the Hugheses bought for $650,000 in 2007.
