In Mississippi – Democrat Travis Childers beat Republican Greg Davis in a special election to replace Republican Roger Wicker, who served in the House since 1994 and was appointed by GOP Gov. Haley Barbour to the U.S. Senate to fill the seat vacated by Trent Lott.
The Bush/Rove/Barbour machine lost a seat that it thought was untouchable. VP Dick Cheney even campaigned for Davis. The GOP tried to defeat Childers by tying him to Sen. Barrack Obama.
