The Drug Enforcement Administration has a database that tracks every single pain pill sold in the United States — by manufacturers and distributors to pharmacies in every town and city.
The Washington Post sifted through nearly 380 million transactions from 2006 through 2012 that are detailed in the DEA’s database and analyzed shipments of oxycodone and hydrocodone pills, which account for three-quarters of the total opioid pill shipments to pharmacies.Â
The Post gained access to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Automation of Reports and Consolidated Orders System, known as ARCOS, as the result of a court order.
Escambia County
From 2006 to 2012 there were 108,324,348 prescription pain pills, enough for 51 pills per person per year, supplied to Escambia County.
•24,212,560 of the pills were distributed by Walgreen Co and 45,552,653 were manufactured by Actavis Pharma, Inc.
•A & E PHARMACY INC, PENSACOLA pharmacy received the highest number of pills.
Santa Rosa County
In more opioids were sold in Santa Rosa County on a per capita basis.
From 2006 to 2012 there were 54,169,114 prescription pain pills, enough for 52 pills per person per year, supplied to Santa Rosa County, Fla.
•10,264,730 of the pills were distributed by Walgreen Co and 26,701,080 were manufactured by Actavis Pharma, Inc.
•HOLIDAY CVS, L.L.C., MILTON pharmacy received the highest number of pills.
