PACs smear opponents final weekend before Aug. 20 primary

Mud splatter

Five days after Rep. Michelle Salzman’s super PAC, Committee to Protect Florida, sent a race-baiting mailer attacking Walker Wilson as a Democrat to benefit Ashlee Hofberger in the Escambia County Commission’s District 4 GOP primary, another super PAC, Build the Wall, sent a mailer attacking Hofberger and Buck Mitchell for being “Liberal Fake Republicans” to benefit Wilson.

  • The mailer: “These liberals ignore the fact that illegal immigration costs Escambia taxpayers millions every year and the drugs coming across the border poison our children. Shame on them.”
  • It declares Mitchell and Hofberger “think President Trump is wrong and illegal immigration isn’t a local problem.”

The PAC is upset that one of the candidates – unnamed in the flyer – dared to say, “We need to be talking about building really strong relationships in our community…”

Build the Wall PAC

The Buck Mitchell Campaign sent Inweekly this response:

“Both of my opponents have now gone negative because they realize what the voters of District 4 will confirm on August 20th- our experienced campaign with a positive vision for the future can not be stopped. So let them go negative. We doubt it will help them catch up to Team Buck!”

A political observer shared that Wilson was doing very well with the Conservative voters in District 4 and needed to reinforce their support for him.

  • I disagree. I hate to see campaigns go negative and don’t believe that Trump and his agenda are deciding factors in county commission races.

Meanwhile, in Santa Rosa County

America Reborn PAC sent a video and this text:

Check out this video! Sam Parker, James Calkins, and Rhett Rowell have taken over $100,000 in donations from developers.

Meanwhile, Jerry Couey and Bobby Burkett have taken $0. See the truth for yourself.

Stop2End

America First Alliance (James Calkins PAC) sent two:

Richard,
James Calkins: A Proven Fighter for Our Local Churches. He always votes to support and protect our churches, standing strong for faith and community. A Christian man, dedicated to defending our values.

And this text to help Mike Priest:

Richard,
While Santa Rosa County citizens struggle to pay their insurance bills and groceries, Commissioner Wright is using their taxpayers’ money to have fun in Paris, France.

  1. This is what happens when young candidates are sadly without enough spine to hold the line against Tallahassee swamp critters using them as pawns in their childish competition with each other. Salzman and Andrade should rest content in having themselves completely sold out their morals and principles to make it big in MAGA.

That in and of itself is sad and sickening enough, watching the two of them flush their intelligence and humanity down the toilet in service to their cancerous ambition. Even worse, that two young local candidates, both with qualities that would seem to lend themselves to leadership, demonstrate such an embarassing lack of ability to stand on their own merits in a local race shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that neither of them are ready for local prime time.

Although Ashlee and Salzman’s flyer is of course far worse–a despicable type of “subtle” representation that is as old as racism itself–nonetheless both Ashlee and Walker should be deeply ashamed of caving to the worst instincts of their respective “mentors,” our childish and cupidinous state reps, who are themselves jockeying down the ladder in a race to see who can fall face-first into a Dantesque ditch more quickly.

When will this nightmare ever end.
