Paddle through the Past: Deadman’s Island, Sept. 28

The Destination Archaeology Resource Center (DARC) and Pensacola Paddlesport are partnering to create a guided archaeology kayak of Deadman’s Island in Gulf Breeze. This two-hour long paddle and hike will focus on the history and archaeology of Deadman’s Island led by staff from the Florida Public Archaeology Network. Participants will meet at the Wayside Park West boat launch by the three mile bridge in Gulf Breeze on Sunday, September 28th, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The program fee is $30.00 and is limited to 20 participants. The fee includes rental of kayak, personal flotation device, and paddle. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Participants will learn about the history and archaeology of Deadman’s Island and the efforts to preserve and protect this non-renewable cultural resource. Participants should dress for the weather and are encouraged to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, plenty of drinking water, snorkeling gear and food.

The Destination Archaeology Resource Center is an archaeology museum located inside the headquarters of the Florida Public Archaeology Network in downtown Pensacola. Exhibits include information about archaeology, archaeological sites across the state, and a temporary exhibit space that highlights current research by UWF archaeology faculty and graduate students. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is located at 207 E. Main Street in Pensacola. Admission is free.
