Palafox Market Still Going Strong

The city’s $10 million New Palafox improvement project brings challenges, but there’s good news for market lovers: Both Palafox Markets will continue operating throughout the entire project.

Sidewalks Open

The New Palafox project has necessitated closing Palafox Street to vehicular traffic between Garden and Government streets, but the city and contractors are working to minimize disruption to businesses and shoppers. Sidewalks on both sides of Palafox will remain open throughout construction, ensuring pedestrian access to all downtown stores, bars, and restaurants.

Free City Parking

Perhaps most importantly for market-goers, the city is providing free on-street parking during construction. City-managed parking spots around MLK Jr. Plaza and Plaza Ferdinand are identified with blue signs and two-digit zone numbers. Private lots will continue their normal operations and fees. A complete map of downtown parking options is available at www.parkpensacola.com.

Free Trolley

To make navigating between the two markets even easier, the city is offering free trolley service from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The trolley will stop at Palafox Market North at MLK Jr. Plaza, Palafox Market South at Plaza Ferdinand, the Commendencia Street Parking lot, Palafox Pier, and the Baylen Garage at Intendencia and Baylen streets.

Support Local

This construction project represents a significant investment in downtown’s future, with improvements designed to enhance Palafox Street’s walkability and aesthetic appeal. But that vision only succeeds if local businesses survive the construction period.
