At its Feb. 10 meeting, the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) of Pensacola is considering a significant renovation project for the iconic Palafox Pier Fountain. A recommendation has been put forward to authorize an Invitation to Bid (ITB) for the repair of the fountain, with a proposed budget of $120,000.
The Palafox Pier Fountain has been an integral part of Pensacola’s South Palafox Redevelopment Project since 1984. The CRA has been responsible for maintaining the promenade, including the fountain, as part of its redevelopment plan. This responsibility was further solidified in 2000 when the City Council approved an amendment to the South Palafox Commercial Lease Agreement, placing the maintenance of all city-constructed improvements under the City’s purview.
Current Issues: Over the years, the fountain has faced numerous maintenance challenges, primarily due to its design. The existing pumps and electrical connections are located underground, subjecting them to frequent flooding. This has resulted in ongoing repairs and pump replacements, making the fountain’s upkeep both costly and inefficient.
Proposed Solution: The proposal suggests relocating the pumps, solenoids, and sand filter above ground. This move is expected to significantly reduce the maintenance issues caused by flooding and improve the overall functionality of the fountain.
Budget and Process: The CRA is considering allocating a budget of $100,000 for the project, with an additional 20% contingency of $20,000, bringing the total proposed budget to $120,000. If approved, the CRA will issue an Invitation to Bid, allowing contractors to submit their proposals for the renovation work.
Once bids are received, they will be brought back to the CRA for review and potential award. This process ensures transparency and aims to secure the best value for the renovation project.
