But the Paychecks Don’t Stretch Far

A new national study puts Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent at #10 among Florida metros for building a tech career. The catch: the area has the lowest senior tech pay of any metro in the state’s top ten, and entry-level salaries barely cover rent.

Pensacola made the cut. A new Metro Tech Career Index from AI video creator Revid AI, which scored 382 US metro areas on technology salaries, job concentration, entry-level affordability and senior pay, ranks Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent 10th in Florida and 307th nationally, with an index score of 45.3.

• That’s the good news. Making a state top ten list of 22 ranked Florida metros is a real signal that the area’s tech sector has enough depth to register. But the numbers behind Pensacola’s ranking tell a more complicated story.

Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent completes the state’s top ten, scoring 45.3 and ranking 307th nationwide. Senior pay is lower than in the other metros in Florida’s top ten, reaching $148,756.

What It Means

Pensacola gets workers in the door, but doesn’t pay them to stay senior. The 1.08 entry-level ratio means a new tech hire here can technically afford a one-bedroom apartment, matching Jacksonville’s ratio and beating Tampa, Orlando and Miami. But that advantage disappears further up the ladder: Pensacola’s $148,756 cost-adjusted senior salary trails every other Florida metro in the top ten, including Tallahassee’s $148,106, which sits just below it, and it’s nearly $39,000 behind Wildwood-The Villages, the state’s top-ranked metro.

• The job market is midsize, not thin. At 25.0 tech jobs per 1,000 jobs, Pensacola sits ahead of Wildwood-The Villages (13.4), Punta Gorda (15.1) and Homosassa Springs (10.2), all of which outranked it. What pulled those smaller markets ahead was pay, not job depth.

The statewide pattern cuts the other way for bigger metros. Tampa, Orlando and Miami all have far larger tech workforces than Pensacola, but their entry-level salaries fall below the local rent affordability threshold. Pensacola’s smaller market at least clears that bar for new hires, even if it can’t compete on what a senior engineer or developer eventually takes home.

Crestview-Fort Walton Beach-Destin ranked second in Florida, just one spot behind the state leader, with a cost-adjusted median salary of $106,667 and senior pay of $169,647, both well above Pensacola’s figures despite the two metros sitting in the same corner of the Panhandle. That gap is worth watching as regional economic development pitches compete for the same tech employers and workers.

Methodology note: Revid AI built the index using Bureau of Labor Statistics salary and employment data for computer and mathematical occupations, Bureau of Economic Analysis local price data, and HUD’s FY2026 Fair Market Rent figures for one-bedroom units. Senior pay reflects the 90th percentile. A ratio above 1.00 on the entry-level measure means a starting salary exceeds the income needed to afford local housing.

The ten best US metros for a tech career
