More than 13,000 volunteers are expected to partner with 300 Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the country to help build affordable housing in their local communities in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 3-11. Now in its seventh year, National Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day to the effort to eliminate poverty housing.

On Saturday, May 11, local volunteers will kick-off a four-month long Women Build fundraising campaign with an all women build. During the four-month period 10 fundraising teams of 15 volunteers will fundraise $7,500 each in order to meet the $75,000 total cost of building a Habitat home. The fundraising campaign will culminate with 150 local volunteers participating in a weeklong build in October.

In addition to Saturday’s build day, longtime event partner Lowe’s will also offer an in-store how-to clinic on Thursday, May 8, where volunteers can learn construction skills in preparation for the build event.

WHY: Women are more likely to face challenges when it comes to finding adequate, affordable housing. The U.S. Census Bureau reports 32 percent of families with a female head of household live in poverty. Forty-two percent of these families have children under the age of 18. Locally, 25% of families with female head of households live in poverty and 35% of them have children under the age of 18 in the home.

Habitat’s National Women Build program recruits, educates and inspires women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable homes in their communities. With a contribution of $1.75 million to National Women Build Week, Lowe’s will provide a $5,000 gift card to more than 300 participating affiliates.
