Pensacola International Airport (PNS) continues its impressive growth trajectory, bolstered by strong federal support and strategic infrastructure improvements. Mayor D.C. Reeves recently returned from productive Washington, D.C. meetings with Senate leadership, securing continued advocacy for the airport’s terminal expansion project.
The mayor’s efforts have already yielded $4 million in FAA funding last year, with ongoing discussions to maintain federal investment in the terminal improvement program. The bipartisan support spans both Florida and Alabama delegations, reflecting the airport’s importance to the broader Gulf Coast region.
Record Growth Continues
Despite Silver Airways’ recent closure, PNS maintains strong momentum with passenger traffic up 5% year-to-date compared to last year’s record-breaking performance. Deputy Airport Director Ken Ibold emphasized that Silver Airways represented only a small portion of overall operations, with the airline’s single route having minimal impact on the airport’s broader success.
- The closure wasn’t entirely unexpected given Silver Airways’ well-publicized financial difficulties. “In bankruptcy situations, it’s very customary that there won’t be a three-week operational run-down,” Mayor Reeves explained. “It’s just too expensive for the holding company.”
Adding More Capacity
With June and July historically being the busiest months, PNS is proactively expanding capacity. The most significant upgrade is a fifth TSA screening lane, set for construction later this year. TSA officials have committed to proper staffing once the lane becomes operational, promising increased throughput and shorter wait times.

Parking Solutions in Motion: Growing passenger volume requires expanded parking solutions. The airport recently paved a new lot on Tippin Road and is designing an expansion to add approximately 400 spaces.
