Pensacola mayor spent $230K on losing legal cases

In May and June, Mayor Ashton Hayward paid Beggs & Lane $95,846 to represent him and his administration on a variety of issues.

Mayor Hayward lost two cases – Pitts Slip Appeal – billing for 1/30/17-6/13/17: $30,936.86; Bayview Cross Litigation – billing for 4/25/17-6/20/17: $49,032.10.

These statements don’t represent all the expenses for these two cases. On the Bayview Cross, Mayor Hayward paid out $80,442 from June 2016 through April 2017. Total spent: $129,474.

On the Pitts Slip Appeal, the mayor had already paid $69,812.68, which brought the cost of the appeal alone to $100,749. This doesn’t include any legal expense prior to June 2016 on this issue.

The total Mayor Hayward paid – without City Council approval – to lose these two cases $230,223.

Other issues included in May and June billing:

Unwinding of CMPA
5/2/17-5/31/17: $15,635.50

Parking Lease Modification
4/20-4/24/17: $242.00

Note: We earlier posted a Beggs & Lane statement regarding the Bayview Cross had an earlier charge of $11,233 that appeared to be for an airplane. We found the invoice and it’s not for an airplane – 83069. It’s unclear why the B&L statement referred to the invoice as “airport misc.”
