Pensacola MESS Hall: Building with Biology week. June 18-24

The Pensacola MESS Hall presents Building with Biology during the week of July 18th-24th., Biology week brings the science of life to your own hands with cool new mess kits, bioengineering activiites designed by an international team, and our award winning summer camps.

Special activities are part of the Building with Biology program developed by the National Informal STEM Education Network and the Museum of Science, Boston with funding from the National Science Foundation.

We will be holding two Building with Biology workshops on July 19th and 21st, both at 2pm . Participants will explore the concepts related to synthetic biology using interactive and hands-on activities. Consider the potential outcomes of using this technology and its societal impact. How might biology-based products provide solutions to a wide range of problems in health, energy, and the environment? How does it all work? Designed for families with children ages 8+, we will have a brief introduction beginning at 2pm and provide guidance from real scientists as you take part in a variety of thought-provoking activities. Learn how to build a super hero, or consider what kind of engineering you’d want to go into the food you eat. Included with admission.

Adult Forum: Should We Engineer the Mosquito? 7/21 5:30 pm – 8 pm
The Building with Biology forum will engage adults in discussion of current ethical questions in biology. On the forefront of biology technology, scientists and public health officials would like to responsibly use this new technology to protect citizens from mosquito-borne illness. What are the concerns, motivations, and implications of this endeavor? Light food and drink will be available to registered participants. Please register in advance for this free event.

Nature Ramble Camp, July 18-22.
Learn more about the natural world as we take a stroll through nature – indoors! Explore the world of living things during this week. It’s a blast of biology whether on land or in the sea.
