Pensions are a problem

BTW: The PNJ editorial board thinks “It’s fiscal insanity to play the city pension plan game”

We’ve been writing on that, too. It was one of the issues of the past city council elections. One of the more famous missteps of the campaign season was then-Councilman Mike DeSorbo telling an audience that he doesn’t have a city pension and then later having to admit all the council members get one.

Here are two of my columns on pensions:
Outtakes-“PATS ON THE HEAD” – 9/18/08

Outtakes – “Pink Pension Elephants“-2/26/09

We are spending nearly up to $14M a year in pension costs. With that money, we could buy our fire and police vehicles with General Fund dollars instead of using Local Option Sales Taxes. We could build the downtown library, community centers and do so many of the capital improvements that we have to put off.

Note: Diane Mack and Maren DeWeese have opted out of the city pension program.
