Plaza de Luna has now reopened to the public, providing an area for residents and visitors to enjoy walking, fishing, beautiful waterfront views and more.
The area was closed while City of Pensacola completed repairs to areas of the plaza that were significantly damaged by Hurricane Sally. The work included repairs to the brick walkway, new gates, handrail repairs, new concrete sidewalks, new park benches and trash receptacles, landscaping restoration and more.
The city also completed electrical upgrades that included new path lighting to help make Plaza de Luna safer and more accessible in the evening.
In anticipation of the Plaza de Luna splash pad reopening for the spring 2023 season, the city installed new pumps for the splash pad, also constructing a new pump house above ground. The goal of the new above ground pump house is to minimize the need for future splash pad pump repairs, which were more frequent with the previous underground pump due to the low water table.
Hurricane Sally repairs have also been completed at Commendencia Slip, including repairs to the seawall, irrigation, railings, roadway, and more. The city also replaced trees in the area and replaced damaged sidewalk.
The city appreciates the public’s patience as staff worked through the FEMA process required to acquire necessary approvals and funding to move forward with Hurricane Sally repairs, including repairs to Plaza de Luna and Commendencia Slip. In addition to the FEMA approval process, which is necessary for the City of Pensacola to receive federal funding for hurricane repair projects, some construction timelines were delayed by the nationwide shortage of lumber and material.
