Plaza de Luna Statue Dedication

Press release:

In celebration of the 450th anniversary of de Luna founding the first Spanish settlement, the Fiesta of Five Flags Association and Celebrate Pensacola are hosting the unveiling and dedication of the memorial monument on Thursday, August 13 at 5:15 p.m. in Plaza de Luna at Palafox Pier.

Local sculptor, Bob Rasmussen created a life-size bronze conquistador memorial statue in celebration of the 450th anniversary. The 6-foot 2-inch statue portrays a conquistador standing upright, holding the flag of the king of Spain. Surrounding the statue are personalized granite pavers purchased by those that wanted to leave a permanent reminder in place for future generations. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

City of Pensacola Mayor Mike Wiggins, Escambia County Commission Chair Marie Young, and other city and county officials will be present. Dr. Judy Bense, University of West Florida Interim President, will present a brief history about the de Luna expedition.

Live entertainment provided by the Community Redevelopment Agency begins at 5:45 p.m.
