The Pensacola Museum of Art, part of the University of West Florida, will present “Controversial Lines: Late Prints†by Salvador Dali from Sept. 9, 2016, through Jan. 7, 2017. An opening reception will be held at the museum on Sept. 9, 2016, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The exhibition— featuring more than 50 works organized by the PMA with support from The Dali Museum, private collections and the PMA Permanent Collection—focuses on multiple print suites and single prints by Dali, from the 1940s to 1980s, following the artist’s formal affiliation with the Surrealist movement. This production phase, initially criticized by art historians as overly commercialized and reactionary, has since become celebrated for its forward-thinking design and influence on Pop Art and contemporary artists. Supplementing the exhibit will be additional prints by such artists, including Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, further enforcing Dali’s influence on art history post-Surrealism.
The PMA is located at 407 S. Jefferson St. in downtown Pensacola and open Tuesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $7 for the general public, $5 for children ages 4-17, $5 for military and seniors, and free for members.
